Is Dental Sensitivity a Dental Emergency?

Dental sensitivity is a common oral health condition that can be a temporary nuisance, a serious problem, or a sign of underlying issues. Depending on what causes their sensitivity, a patient may experience acute discomfort or sharp pain during chewing or when their teeth are exposed to hot, cold, sweet, or acidic items. Here’s a brief guide to what can cause dental sensitivity as well as how to tell if you need to see your emergency dentist.

What Can Cause Sensitive Teeth?

Dental sensitivity can be caused by a range of factors such as:

  • Something stuck between the teeth: A stubborn object wedge between two teeth can force them into uncomfortable positions and make them more sensitive to stress.
  • Worn enamel: If the enamel of a tooth is too thin, the dental structure is less insulated against temperature changes.
  • Compromised enamel: If a person has untreated cavities, a loose filling, or cracks in their teeth, the delicate inner dental structure can be left exposed to the oral environment.
  • Exposed roots: Gum recession can expose the roots of a tooth, leaving it more sensitive to environmental changes.

How Should I Treat Dental Sensitivity at Home?

Most dental sensitivity is a temporary issue, and you may be able to resolve it at home with methods such as:

  • Flossing: Thoroughly cleaning between your teeth can dislodge uncomfortable debris.
  • Rinsing: Using a salt-water solution or antibacterial mouthwash may flush offending food particles away from beneath the teeth while also killing harmful oral bacteria.
  • Desensitizing toothpaste: Many people with sensitive teeth regularly use this to help their teeth stay comfortable.

When Should I See My Emergency Dentist for Sensitive Teeth?

If your dental sensitivity persists after a few days have passed or if it causes severe pain, contact your emergency dentist. In these cases, the problem may be caused by severe damage, untreated decay, or compromised dental restorations, meaning that the tooth requires the attention of a trained professional. A dentist may address this issue by repairing or replacing restorations, treating oral infections, or administering a fluoride treatment to reinforce your enamel. However, if the tooth is damaged beyond repair, it may require extraction.

Dental sensitivity may be a minor nuisance or a significant oral health issue. Getting emergency dental care when you need it can be the best way to ensure that your smile stays healthy and beautiful for years to come.
