Veneers Can Change Your Life. Should You Change Your Diet?

A new set of veneers can completely change your life. The confidence that a beautiful smile can afford you will improve your social life, dating life, and may even enhance your career prospects!

With all the ways that your life will change with your veneers, you might wonder whether your diet will have to shift as well. It’s a good question; here’s what you should know.

Will I Have to Change My Diet for my Veneers?

Veneers are fairly strong and are attached to your teeth with a powerful dental adhesive. That means that your diet won’t necessarily have to change much when you get your new smile; most of the foods that you ate before are still on the table.

However, there are some foods that can be particularly problematic for your veneers, and that you might want to avoid:

  • Hard foods, like rock candy or popcorn kernels, can potentially crack or dislodge your veneers.
  • Alcoholic beverages can potentially weaken the cement that attaches the veneers to the teeth and should therefore be consumed in moderation.
  • Tobacco products can both weaken the cement on your veneers and stain your restoration.
  • Dark foods and liquids, like coffee and wine, can stain your veneers if used in excess. They should therefore only be taken in moderation.

Temporary Veneers and a Soft Food Diet

Typically, veneers aren’t made in your dentist’s office; they’re constructed in a specialized lab. This means that there’s typically a gap in time between when enamel is removed from your tooth and when you finally get your veneer.

In the meantime, most people will wear a temporary veneer, which is adhered to the tooth with a much weaker cement than your permanent veneers. This being the case, it’s often necessary to adopt a soft food diet while you have your temporaries.

While this can sound restrictive, there are plenty of softer foods that you can incorporate into your diet for a few weeks:

  • Scrambled eggs
  • Smoothies
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Oatmeal
  • Hummus
  • Cottage cheese
  • Tofu
  • Pasta
  • Refried beans
  • Pudding

Stick to these staples and you should be able to keep your temporary veneers for quite a long time.
