The start of a new year is a good opportunity to think carefully about the kind of care you’re giving your grin. Are you doing all you can to prevent cavities and gum disease? Or are there a few changes you could make to improve your oral health? To keep your teeth and gums safe throughout 2023, you might consider making a few smile-friendly New Year’s resolutions; here are 5 ideas to help you get started.
1. Start Brushing Longer
The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends brushing your teeth for two minutes at a time. However, chances are that you’re not brushing nearly that long, which means you aren’t cleaning your teeth as thoroughly as you could. This year, you can start setting a timer before every brushing session to ensure that you’re giving your entire smile the attention it deserves.
2. Add Flossing to Your Daily Routine
Many adults don’t floss as often as they should. And while you might think that brushing every day is enough to protect your teeth and gums, the truth is that there are many areas in your mouth that a toothbrush can’t reach. To remove bacteria and food particles from between your teeth, you need to make flossing a daily habit. Take whatever steps are necessary to help you remember to floss, such as leaving a sticky note on the bathroom mirror.
3. Start Scraping Your Tongue
Harmful bacteria can build up anywhere in your mouth, and that includes your tongue. As such, if you want your mouth to be as healthy as possible, you need to clean more than just your teeth and gums. Pick up a tongue scraper and make it a regular part of your oral hygiene routine.
4. Drink More Water
The saliva in your mouth is frequently washing bacteria off of your teeth. As such, if your mouth dries out, your risk of tooth decay will increase significantly. To make sure that you have a healthy supply of saliva, you need to stay hydrated. Throughout the year, try carrying a water bottle wherever you go so that you can keep your mouth moist at all times.
5. Watch What You Eat
Foods that are acidic or high in sugar can wreak havoc on your smile. While you don’t have to cut such foods out of your diet altogether, you should take care not to overindulge. Focus more on foods that are good for your oral health. For example, crunchy fruits and vegetables help clean your teeth as you chew them.
Remember that if you have any concerns about your oral health throughout the year, you can always call your dentist. They can give you further tips for taking better care of your teeth and gums so that you still have a beautiful, healthy smile to show off at the end of 2023.
