5 Tips for A Healthier Smile This Summer

What’s on your to-do list this summer? Maybe you’re gearing up for a long family vacation. Or perhaps you’re planning to spend your days relaxing by the poolside, soaking up some sun. No matter what you’re preparing to do this season, something to keep in mind is your oral health; summer vacation doesn’t mean taking a vacation from personal hygiene! Here are some tips from your dentist in Orange Park to help you keep your smile healthy and bright all throughout the summertime.

1. Drink Enough Water

It’s important to drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially during the summer. Water is the absolute best beverage for your whole body, including your teeth! Drinking it throughout the day helps to keep your mouth hydrated while also stimulating the natural flow of saliva. This helps to wash away excess bacteria that lingers around in your mouth—and it also freshens your breath!

2. When You Can, Pick Tap Water

Bottled water is very convenient for when you’re on the go, but you should try to opt for tap water whenever possible. There’s nothing wrong with drinking bottled water, but tap water often has fluoride added to it, which is very good for your teeth! Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that strengthens your teeth’s enamel, increasing its resistance to decay. Check to see if your city adds fluoride to its water supply and drink up.

3. Avoid Soda and Carbonated Drinks

Even though drinks like ice-cold sodas and tall glasses of lemonade are the perfect way to cool off, you should try to avoid these and other carbonated drinks. These items are often very sugary and acidic, and frequently enjoying them can lead to damaged and worn tooth enamel. They also often contain staining agents that can discolor your teeth. Remember, once your tooth enamel is gone, it’s gone for good; doing what you can to preserve it will go a very long way towards a healthy smile.

4. Use A Drinking Straw

Drinking through a straw can greatly reduce the amount of contact between your teeth and whatever you’re drinking. If you can’t resist the urge to slurp down a cold Coke or Pepsi, at least enjoy it through a straw; your teeth will thank you! It also helps to finish your drinks quickly, rather than sipping them slowly over time.

5. Try Tea

Certain teas can actually be relatively good for you—some of them contain compounds that can suppress bacteria! This can help to slow down the development of things like tooth decay and gum disease; something soda certainly can’t do! Just be mindful of the sugary additives that are often added to tea, as they can still wear down your enamel.

This summer while you’re out having fun, there’s no need to jeopardize your oral health! Following these five tips and being mindful of your habits can help to ensure that your smile remains white and bright throughout the season.
