The great thing about dentures is that they can be a good tooth replacement option for almost anyone. The not-so-great thing about dentures is that once in a blue moon, they can give you oral sores. Fortunately, you’re not stuck with these annoying bumps forever! If you’re sick of denture sores, give these home remedies a try.
First, Let’s Alleviate the Pain
Before treating your denture sores, take a moment to ingest the recommended dosage of an over-the-counter pain medication. It’s typically safe to take them for oral aches, and if you prefer ibuprofen, your body may appreciate the reduced inflammation. Once you’re more comfortable, it’ll be easier to tackle those pesky sores!
Brush Your Mouth and Don’t Forget Your Tongue
If you’re not careful, denture sores can lead to an oral infection, making your situation much worse. Even more so than usual, good oral hygiene is important for avoiding this risk. Be sure to keep your soft mouth tissues clean, to floss between any remaining teeth, and brush your tongue. Your dentures should get a thorough scrubbing as well – bacteria can collect underneath and on the surface of your appliance, earning a one-way ticket straight to your mouth.
Make a Saltwater Rinse
Getting salt on your sores might not sound appealing, but there’s a science to it. Salt has natural antibacterial properties and actually promotes your body’s healing process. To make an effective saltwater rinse, use about ¼ cup of warm water and ¼ a teaspoon of salt. Stir until the salt dissolves, then swish the mixture around your mouth for at least 30 seconds. Spit when you’re done, and that’s all there is to it!
Take a Break
The point of your dentures is to help you with everyday oral function. That said, if you don’t take a break from wearing them and remove them at night, you’re not giving your gums and mouth tissue a chance to rest and, in this case, heal. They can circulate a lot better when they’re not shouldering an oral appliance, so with your dentures soaking securely in their cleaning solution, sore-fighting nutrients will flow much more efficiently to your gums!
If all else fails, consult with your dentist. Denture sores can sometimes mean your appliance doesn’t fit quite right, and a prolonged case of the oral bumps could certainly mean they need an adjustment. Your dentist will be able to tell with a thorough examination and will help you get back to a comfortable, sore-free life.
